W2_ISHAQ_Building_Home_decision

Problem Definition

In the beginning of 2017, I started to plan for building my home in Muscat. I was planning to build my home in Al Amirat since I already have a land over there and I was working in Ruwi which is around 20 minutes far from Al Amirat. Two months ago, I got an offer to join OPWP, which is located in Al-Khuwair, and I accepted the offer after negotiation 😊. I thought that I should re-think about where I should build my house.
Development of Feasible Alternatives
There are three suitable places to build in; Al-Amirat, Al-Ansab or Al-Maabilah.
Development of the Outcome for Alternative
I considered the following criteria to do my analysis
  • ·         Price
  • ·         Family Neighbors
  • ·         Time to reach office
  • ·         Obstacles

 Selection of Criteria

Figure 1. Analysis Comparison [2]
Analysis and Comparison of the Alternative.
 By using Grid Analysis, which is a useful technique to use for making a decision and it is most effective where you have a number of good alternatives and many factors to take into account, the comparison of the above criteria will be as below;

Figure 2. Weight Assessment [2]
The numbers shown in the weight assessment table are based on the criteria that is the high end of the score scale to indicate the place that perform best on this criteria.
  • ·         Price is ranked as lower as higher mark
  • ·         Family neighbor is ranked as more family neighbors as higher rank
  • ·         Time to reach office as lower as higher mark
  • ·         For the Obstacles, if “yes” 1 and if “no” 2

Selection of the Preferred Alternative.
Figure 2 shows that Al-Ansab scored the highest ranked which can be considered as the preferred alternative.
Performance Monitoring and the Post Evaluation of Result.
Although Al-Ansab is preferred, but considering the price of the land, Al-Amirat might be a suitable alternative.

Comments

  1. Good case study but why not experiment with the other Multi-Attribute Decision making models using the same case study? There are many more than the one you showed us. Go HERE http://www.planningplanet.com/guild/gpccar/managing-change-the-owners-perspective and scroll down to Figures 8-14. Using the same case study some some of the other approaches. See which ones) you like the most? See if any of them yield a different result?

Have fun mastering this VERY useful and powerful tool...
