W1_Afra_Tuckman Analysis

1.     Problem Recognition
To ensure project succession, the project manager supposed to know the personality of each member in his team to enroll them in the perfect place and to use the appropriate leadership style according to the stage/phase the team is in. Moreover, combined different personality lead to perfect result for the final decision. My first blog is to assess the OPWP PMP team that was formed for purpose of PMP course which was conducted in Raddison Blue, Muscat by using Tuckman Analysis to evaluate the behavior of teamwork and what style of leadership should be adopted in order to achieve the objectives of this course.

2.     Feasible alternatives
Tuckman’s introduced four stages of team development which describes how teams develop and relationships are forged. An effective manager must be able to assess where a team is in to adjust their leadership style used for that team. Four leadership styles were introduced:
               a. Telling
             b. Selling
             c. Participating
             d. Delegation

Figure 1: Tuckman's leadership style

3.    Development of the outcome of Alternative
OPWP PMP team contains 13 members. The assessment will be performed through 32 question survey containing statements about teamwork. Each team Member scores each of the questions using a scale of 1(Almost never) to 5 (Almost always), according to that, the team can be either in Forming phase(telling leadership style) , Storming Phase(selling leadership style), Norming Phase(participating leadership style) or Performing(delegating  leadership style) Phase which will lead to knowing the suitable leadership can be used by the program manager.

4.  Selection Criteria

Following the completion of survey questions, the results are summarized below:
Stage
Value
Rank
Forming
23
3
Storming
20
4
Norming
30
2
Performing
31

                    Table 1: Data Analysis

According to higher rate from the table above, OPWP PMP team is performing. Therefore, the leadership style is “Delegation Style” which give the manager authority to make decisions, delegate the tasks to the team members and guide them accordingly.

Figure 2: Tuckman's leadership style model

5.   Analysis and comparison of the Alternative
As a result of analyzing the survey, the current leadership style for the team is Delegation style based on the highest average score in performing stage which means that each individual in the team know what to do, how to do it, and when without coaching and instructions from the leader, they all have clear objective, and they are collaborative. The main task for the manager is to monitor the team work, involve everyone, and provide little direction if required.
On the other hand, the lowest score is in storming stage, which means that no need to use coaching and guidance for each single task.

6.  Selection of the preferred Alternative
The preferred alternative is Delegation and supporting , which shows that all team members are working for each other and trying to achieve one goal and avoid making conflicts with each other.

7.  Performance Monitoring and the Post Evaluation of result
It is recommended to track all the progress of each member of the team to ensure that everyone is well performing. Moreover, it's better to redo this analysis after several weeks to ensure that the result is accurate.
