W1_ASHWAQ_TUCKMAN ANALYSIS ASSIGNMENT
W1_Ashwaq_Tuckman Analysis Assignment
1. Problem Statement
Working in a team must be properly managed with
the proper leadership style to get the best out of your team. As the team of OPWP PMI 2017 is going to be working together to
pass the PMI certificates, then it was a good start to do the Tuckman analysis to
know what stage in team development we are in. The stages of team development
are shown in Figure1 below. Identifying the stage of your team will allow you
then to know the applicable leadership style which best suits the team.
Figure 1
Tuckman's 5 Stages of Team Development
2. Results Analysis
The team has answered the Tuckman’s survey. It had 32 questions 8
for each stage. The rating was in a scale of 5 for each question as shown in
Figure 2 below.
Figure 2
Scoring Scale
The results were collected and summarized in Table 1 below.
Table 1: Assessment Results

Forming

Norming

Performing

|
It is clear from table 1, that the highest two scores
were for Norming and Performing stages. Even though we have just started this
team for the PMP course, but we are all well knowing each other since we work
in the same company and already passed the first stages of the team
development. These scores tells us the team is now in the Performing stage.
3. Feasible alternatives
For the Performing team the feasible alternative
of leadership style are :
1- Delegation
2- Monitoring
3- Provides little
direction
4. Minimum Acceptable
Criteria
In this team we need a leadership style that
will control the team’s progress and make sure that each one is motivated to do
the work efficiently. A proper leadership for this stage of the team should
work without heavily involving in the details of each activity.
5. Outcome from the
leadership style

Delegation
|
Delegation is
important for efficiency and development. Delegation does not only lead to
the team’s efficiency, but also to the contribution of every team member,
increasing everyone’s development.
|
Most preferable
|
Monitoring
|
Monitoring leader must
monitor closely the progress of the team and keep them in the track. This can
be time and energy consuming.
|
Average
|
Provides little
direction
|
A leader who provides
little details to the team, is trusting that the team knows what they’re
doing. This type of leadership might cause misunderstanding.
|
Least preferable
|
6. Selecting the Leadership
style
Delegation leadership will be the best choice
for our team. By delegating tasks/responsibilities each team member will get
the chance to develop new skill or knowledge. This will help in equalizing the
work pressure on one person to all team members.
7.
Follow up with the
Leadership style chosen
Clear and successful delegation will improve the
team’s commitment and work efficiency. If this has not been achieved then we
can go back and evaluate the process of delegation that has been followed.

Good work, Ashwaq!!! You were a bit weak on the FEASIBLE ALTERNATIVES (they should have been Telling, Selling, Participating and Delegating) https://garudaaace2015.wordpress.com/2015/03/03/w1_rd_leadership-style-analysis-by-using-tuckman-model/comment-page-1/ but I will accept this as being close enough. You captured the key points. It will be interesting if you run this on your real teams in your working environment and also again on this team around W4 or W5. That always proves interesting.
