W1_ISHAQ_Leadership Style using Tuckman Analysis

Problem Definition

After the first stage of PMP course, which is face to face programme, held in Radisson Blu Hotel in Muscat, the distance learning mode just started for the Future OPWP 2017 team.
The first blog is suggested by Dr. Paul Giammalvo which is an assessment of the Future OPWP 2017 team  members using the Bruce Tuckman  model in order to understand what stage the group is currently operating in and the leadership styles.

Identify the Feasible Alternative

In 1965, Dr. Bruce Tuckman published his 4 stages model. They are Forming, Storming, Norming and Performing.  In the 1970s, he added a fifth stage called Adjourning. The model states that to be an effective manager, you must be able to assess where a team is in this life cycle and be able to adjust the leadership style that moves the team forward accordingly.

Figure 1. Tuckman model

An overview of the type of intervention that a leader should make is that at the begging stage he should set the objectives moving to resolving conflicts. Then facilitating processes and finishing by coaching.
His focus should start on individual tasks, moving to people interactions then task interactions. After that, finishing be team self-development.

Development of the Outcome for Alternative

A 32 questions survey, that contains statements about teamwork, developed by Donald Clark has been filled by the Future OPWP 2017 team. The scoring scale is from 1 to 5 and each team Member scores each of the 32 questions using the following scale:

Scale
Response
1
Almost Never
2
Seldom
3
Occasionally
4
Frequently
5
Almost Always

Selection Criteria

After the completion of survey questions, the results are summarized within Table 2 below:

Storming

Performing

Table 2. Survey Results

The results shows that Future OPWP team is in Performing stage 😊.

Analysis and Comparison of the Alternative

According to the results shown in Table 2, there is a small difference between the average scores for both Norming and Performing stages. This indicates that the team is advanced stages and the reason for this might be that all team members are working in the same company and have already worked together.
It is concluded that the team is in the Performing stage since the highest score is Performing stage.

Leadership style

Since the team is in the Performing stage and to achieve the team goal, the suitable leadership style that is highly required is the delegation and monitoring. Also, the leader should set the goals which the team accomplishes with low amount of two way communications.

Performance Monitoring and the Post Evaluation of Result

To monitor the performance, it is recommended to do the same exercise in the late weeks of the distance learning mode stage. Also, if the progress of the team and its output does not reflect the results shown above, I meant the Performing stage, the survey should be undertaken again.
