W1_YN_Tuckman Analysis Assignment
W1_YN_Tuckman Analysis Assignment
Problem Statement
An effective manager has to constantly adjust his or her
leadership style and techniques in order to match the needs of the team. They must
be able to recognize any problems the team may be facing, and be flexible in
their approach in dealing with the team individually and collectively. Part of
their task is to assess the team in order to find out the phase in which the
team resides within the team development phases. An effective model that is commonly
used is the Tuckman’s model which defines four developments stages that teams
go through until they reach a high performing state. An analysis was conducted on
our OPWP PMP team to find out the stage in which our team resides. The analysis
is used to determine whether the team is at the Forming, Storming, Norming, or
Performing stages of Tuckman’s model.
Assessment Results
The survey had a total of 32 questions done by each
member. The results were averaged across the team members, which are shown in table
1 below. The lowest possible score for any of the stages was 8, while the highest
was 40.

Results Analysis
As seen from table 1 above, the highest two scores belong
to the Norming and Performing stages, with the Performing stage being the one
that the team is currently in. This indicates that the team is at the later
stages of the team development phases and has reached a maturity level that
allows it to perform at a high level.
This is surprising considering that the team is newly
formed. The root cause to this surprising result could be that all team members
work for the same company (OPWP), and possibly even in the same team within the
company. Therefore, the team members have already experienced many of the characteristics
of the Forming and Norming stages, and have already built a relationship with
many of the other members. This allowed the feeling of being in a team to be
quickly established, with the goals and expectations being set clearly.
Leadership Styles
Four main leadership styles are considered: directing,
coaching, supporting, and delegating. When considering which style best fits
our team, Multi-Attribute Decision Making (MADM) can be performed for the four feasible alternatives. However, the
decision at hand does not require such methodology due to its simplicity. The
leadership style that fits our team is the delegating type in which the leader
leaves it to the team to do most of the decision making, while simply
monitoring their performance. This allows our team to build more autonomy in
accomplishing tasks quickly, while building the skillset of all members. Under
this style, little direction and support is given to the members, which reflects
trust within the team.
Tracking of Progress
Figure 1 below relates the effectiveness of a team to the
development stage. Although our team is at the Performing stage, I believe as
we progress through the project we will discover new traits to the team that
might put it under the earlier stages of the model. Therefore, we shall closely
monitor the team for any arising challenges and advise the relevant project
manager to adjust his/her leadership style accordingly. This ensures that the
effectiveness of the team is maintained at the higher levels.
