W1_Thuraiya_Leadership Styles analysis Using Tuckman model

1-     Problem Recognition:

         OPWP PMP team are currently at the stage of distance learning in the PMP course. The     team consist of 13 members and has started course from 29th Oct and we’re aiming to be certified no later than 25th Mar . During the current stage, every individual must submit a weekly blog related to a real work issue faced in the organization to determine the causes and the solutions. In  first blog Dr. Paul has requested  to measure the team development and behavior using Tuckman’s Model. To insure the success of every project the  members must  understand the goals and the roles of each one to collaborate to achieve their goals. Further the team leader must understand his team behavior to know the most optimum leadership style must be adopted while managing the project. 

2-    Identify the Feasible Alternative
Tuckman model was established 5 decades ago. The model is dividing team behaviors into 4 stages the figure below illustrates the differences between each stage:



Tuckman theory was the base of the Hersey-Blanchard Situational Leadership Theory which measures leadership style depending on the maturity level of those being led. The theory categories the leadership styles on four behaviors (telling, selling, participating and delegating) illustrated in the figure below:




3- Development of the Outcome for Alternative
OPWP PMP team member answered 32 question survey developed by Erin Barkema and John W. Moran to measure the behavior of the team at the current time. the answers scale from (1-5) from (almost never to almost always)

4-      Analysis and Comparison of the Alternative
From the above results the status of our team is at the Performing stage as it ranked the highest among all other stages.one of the reasons that the team scored highly in this stage is that OPWP PMP team came from an organization that is considered relatively small organization in terms of employee number. The company has 70 employees at the current time. Almost all the team worked with each other during the past period. Which is reflected in establishing the team, management and distributing the work during this course. The leadership style in this case has to match the stage the team in so it is recommended to select the delegating style since all members are aware of their goals and responsibilities. Although the team is still in charge however, it is more of monitoring.

5-      Selection of the Preferred Alternative
The preferred alternative is Norming as it is ranked second with 30 on average. the preferred alternative leadership style is participating since all team members are aware of the goals they will participate in the decision making with the team leader to achieve them.

6-     Performance Monitoring and the Post Evaluation of Result
It is recommended to repeat  the survey in week 10 or later to confirm the results.

  1. Sorry Ms Aiya but you've made two mistakes you need to fix. Go back and check out our 7 step process again. Somehow you missed one of the steps. Also the TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS require that you use a MINIMUM of 3 and you only provided us with two.

    What that means is you need to leave this blog unchanged "as written" and REPOST a new blog named W1.1_Thuraiya_Tuckman where you make the corrections.

    1. Dear Dr. Paul all 7 steps exist however there is a formatting error that lead to consider number 4 to be written twice. However, all 7 steps are implemented kindly double check on the blog. further 3 references are listed not two.
